Suicide and Self harm- 22/23

This course is targeted to the adult workforce (see LSCP programme for those working with young people) to carry out their roles and responsibilities such as social care workers, carers, health professionals, police, public health and others that are part of the  adults safeguarding partnership in the London Borough of Sutton.

Please note this is a 2 half days course and both part 1 and part 2 must be attended.


The aim of this session is:

To give participants a clearer understanding of the issues involved in working with people who harm themselves AND/OR have ideation about, or have attempted suicide. 


By the end of this course participants should have:

  • Understand the various definitions of self-harm 
  • Understand the various definitions of suicide and attempted suicide 
  • Appreciate the importance of the continuum, from accidental harm to deliberate harm to attempted suicide to suicide 
  • Explore some myths and misunderstandings around suicide and self-harm
  • Be able to identify some of the influencing factors, such as mental ill health and substance abuse 
  • Be able to identify some early indicators which might indicate an increased risk of suicide and/or self-harm 
  • Have learned some support strategies which might help a self-harmer to cope 
  • Have learned some support strategies which might help a potential suicide victim to cope
  • Have learned some ways of ensuring that they look after their own emotional wellbeing when dealing with a potentially traumatic event
