Target Group

This course is targeted to registered Nurses in Care Homes and Supported Living accommodation within the Private, Voluntary and Independent Sectors in the London Borough of Sutton. 

Aims

The aims of this session are:

  • To understand the anatomy of the skin
  • To understand the healing process
  • To identify different types of wounds and pressure ulcers
  • To apply the principles of wound management and optimise any required treatment for the persons in
  • To be able to manage and prevent pressure ulcers

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course participants will have:

  • An improved knowledge to describe the anatomy and physiology of the skin
  • An improved knowledge and  confidence on how to complete a thorough wound assessment
  • An ability to describe factors that contribute to wound healing
  • An increased understanding in different wound care products and reason for application in relation to stage of wound healing
  • An increased understanding in managing and identifying different types of wounds
  • An ability to categorise pressure ulcers and differentiate pressure ulcers from moisture lesions and deep tissue injuries
  • An improved understanding of how to prevent pressure ulcers  
  • An ability to carry out risk assessments using validated tools to identify those at risk
  • An improved understanding importance of correct pressure relieving equipment 
  • An improved understanding importance of correct manual handling in pressure ulcer prevention
