Biography

Christine Cocker is a Professor in Social Work and Head of the School of Social Work at UEA, She joined the Department in September 2013. Prior to this she worked at Middlesex University for 10 years. Christine is a registered social worker (she completed her social work training in New Zealand in the 1980's) and has over 30 years experience as a social worker and manager in child and family social work in Local Authorities and voluntary sector organisations in the UK. Christine maintains strong links in practice as she is currently an independent member of a Local Authority permanence panel and chair of a local authority's Children's Academy. Christine researches and writes about Transitional Safeguarding, social work and sexuality, and social work with looked after children. She has recently co-authored a Safeguarding Adult Review report about a care-experienced young person with Transitional Safeguarding needs.

Earlier this year, with Fiona Bateman amongst others, Christine co-authored an article for the Journal of Adult Protection on Transitional Safeguarding: presenting the case for developing Making Safeguarding Personal for young people in England. Fiona Bateman, as you are all aware, is a trained solicitor and also the independent chair of the SSAB.

Fiona Bateman is the Independent Chair of Sutton’s Safeguarding Adults Board. She is a qualified solicitor and trainer who specialises in health, social care, mental capacity, and safeguarding legal duties. She has been involved in a number of Safeguarding Adults Reviews involving transitional safeguarding concerns and has contributed to articles and briefings on practice improvement in this area.
