TARGET GROUP

This course is targeted to qualified nurses and senior/experienced carers working in nursing residential Learning Disability and Mental Health Homes and senior/experienced carers in the START Team within the London Borough of Sutton.

AIM

The aims of this session are:

  • To enable practitioners to develop skills in drawing up blood for laboratory investigation, and administering injections such as Vitamin B12 and other intramuscular injections. 
  • To update delegates on the latest guidelines in managing anaphylaxis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course participants will have:

  • An improved understanding of anatomy and physiology of hand veins and injection sites on the body.
  • An improved knowledge of legal and professional issues in performing invasive procedures
  • An improved knowledge of infection control related to giving an injection and in taking bloods.
  • An increased understanding of the different techniques and equipment available for preparing and performing invasive procedures
  • An increased understanding of indications, contra-indications, and possible complications
  • An increased understanding of documentation of the procedure and monitoring of the site
  • An increased knowledge of venepuncture and injection technique on life-sized mannequins.
  • An increased understanding and knowledge of anaphylaxis
