Target Group

This course is targeted to carers within Nursing, Residential and Day Care Services, including Home Carers in the London Borough of Sutton.

Aim

The aims of this session are:

  • To enable participants to understand the anatomy of the skin · 
  • To identify different types of wounds · 
  • To apply the principles of wound management and optimise any required treatment for the persons in their care
  • To be aware of support available in the community
  • To provide participants with a good understanding of how to maintain the integrity of the skin 
  • To provide knowledge in relation to prevention of pressure ulcers
  • To understand how to recognise skin damage
  • To understand use of pressure relieving equipment
  • To understand different categories of pressure ulcers
  • To be aware of the importance of correct manual handling
  • To be aware of the importance of skin care and hygiene

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course participants will have:

  • Gain greater knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the skin 
  • Gain greater understanding of  how wounds and pressure ulcers form and identify what factors contribute to this
  • Increase their knowledge to define what a pressure ulcer is and describe what is meant by a category 1,2,3, 4, unstageable and suspected deep tissue injury in pressure ulceration  
  • Increase their knowledge to define what a moisture lesion is and be able to recognise the difference between a moisture lesion and pressure damage
  • Gain the ability to describe factors that contribute to pressure ulcer healing
  • Participate in discussion on the application of different types of wound care products 
  • Develop their skills on how to can promote and practice good pressure ulcer care and prevent pressure ulcers from forming
