This course is targeted to Adult Social Care staff within the London Borough of Sutton and Private, Independent and Voluntary (PVI) sector supporting Sutton residents in residential care, nursing care, home care, personal assistants, and supported living.
Staff Groups A, B, C and D as per Bournemouth University national Competency framework for Safeguarding Adults. Level 1, Level 2 staff and above (ref: NHS Intercollegiate document 2018 - Adult Safeguarding: Roles and Competencies For Healthcare Staff):
This training session is designed to give health and social care staff (including professionals and volunteers) an awareness of the concept of self-neglect, as introduced by the Care Act 2014. It is also designed to implement the SSAB Self-neglect and Hoarding protocol.
By the end of this course participants will have:
- Improved knowledge and understanding about the concept of ‘self-neglect’ and what type of behaviours may be considered as such
- Improved understanding of the nature of hoarding behaviours as a particular type of self-neglect, and why this may occur;
- Improved understanding about the difficulty in engaging clients who self-neglect;
- Awareness about findings from research studies concerning self-neglect and hoarding;
- Awareness of the learning outcome from Safeguarding Adults Reviews that have involved self-neglect and how to apply key messages to practice;
- Improved understanding of the concept of Mental Capacity and the legal framework related to the issues raised by self-neglect and hoarding behaviours;
- Improved awareness of the Human Rights Act and how this may impact on the individual who may self-neglect, in particular Articles 8 and 5 of the European Convention on Human Rights;
- Improved awareness of the responsibilities of Local Authorities under Section 42 of the Care Act 2014 with regard to making enquiries concerning the safeguarding of individuals who may be at risk; and
- Improved knowledge of local policies and procedures regarding adults who may self-neglect, how the care pathways specified may operate and how to take forward safeguarding concerns.
