TARGET GROUP

This course is targeted to:

  • All professionals and volunteers in early help, children’s social care, adolescent services, schools and health settings to help identify needs, assess and contribute to multi-agency meetings who work for the London Borough of Sutton.  

Competency level:

  • Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads) as set out in the Competence Still Matters training framework published by the London Safeguarding Children Board. Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.

AIMS

The aims of this session are:

  • To understand the impact of developmental trauma and how this differs from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and to reflect on current practice and think about what practitioners might need to do to implement a trauma-informed approach in their work to support children and families.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By attending this course, participants will have: 

  • An Improved knowledge about the causes of developmental trauma and links with attachment relationships;
  • An improved knowledge and understanding about the links with early developmental trauma and presentations of emotional distress, mental health diagnoses, self-harm and suicide;
  • An improved knowledge about the benefits of therapeutic parenting approaches for young people who have experienced developmental trauma;
  • An improved knowledge and understanding about trauma informed approaches by the wider system / network and how this influences positive outcomes;
  • An improved knowledge around the impact on professionals working with people affected by trauma (i.e. secondary trauma) and to explore strategies for self-care;
  • An improved knowledge and skills to apply tools/resources;
  • An improved knowledge around the strategies that are helpful when working with children and families in a trauma-informed approach.
