TARGET GROUP
This training is targeted at:
- Professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation who work for the London Borough of Sutton.
Competency level:
- Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads), and NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.
AIMS
The aims of this session are:
- To provide participants with the knowledge required to identify, assess and support children and young people who self-harm.
- To cover statutory requirements, pan-London child protection procedures and local area practice and the application of the LSCP management of self-harm and suicidal ideation protocol.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By attending this course, participants will have:
- An improved knowledge of identification of self-harm and assessment of risk levels in line with the LSCP threshold guidance;
- An increased knowledge of how to manage conversations about self-harm;
- An increased knowledge of coping/distraction strategies and distress tolerance;
- An increased knowledge to complete safety plans/What If Plan for self-harm and how to involve the parent/carer;
- An increased knowledge of what best practice in managing self-harm looks like by sharing case examples;
- An increased knowledge around the differences in suicidal ideation and self-harm and how they relate to each other.
