Target group
This training is targeted at professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, foster carers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads), and NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.
Aims
The aims of the training is to:
• Gain a better understanding and increased knowledge of LGBT+ experiences and lives
• Have greater confidence in supporting and being an ally to LGBT+ children and young people
• Improve knowledge of how to create a more inclusive and safer environment for LGBT+ children and young people
Learning objectives
By the end of this course participants will have a better understanding of:
• Concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity
• Current terminology and language relating to sexual orientation and gender identity
• Common myths and misinformation about LGBT+ identities and people
• Relevant legislation and how this applies to an organisation providing services
• How to identify and challenge homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, insults and language
• How to improve LGBT+ inclusion and make your organisation an LGBT+ safer space.
