TARGET GROUP:

This course is targeted to all social care staff in children’s services who work for the London Borough of Sutton.

AIM:

The aim of this session is:

This is an introductory 4-day training on Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, an intervention model for families with a child whom has trauma-attachment problems, developed by Dan Hughes, Clinical Psychologist, USA.  In this training, theory and research in the areas of developmental trauma, child development and attachment theory are integrated to produce a therapeutic approach and parenting model used for relationship development and trauma resolution.  DDP recognises the vital role which adoptive parents, foster carers and the support systems around them play as attachment figures in the recovery of traumatised, attachment-resistant children.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course participants should have:

  • An improved understanding about the impact of secure developmental attachment on neurological, affective, cognitive, and behavioural development
  • An increased understanding around how developmental trauma (abuse and neglect) create insecure and disorganised attachment patterns which impede normal development
  • An increased understanding about principles of psychotherapy, effective communication and parenting that facilitate the development of attachment security
  • An improved understanding around specific strategies of parenting and communication that facilitate the development of a secure attachment and help children integrate past trauma and abusive experiences.
  • An improved understanding about how the caregiver’s attachment history and attachment patterns can be important factors when providing care for children who have experienced developmental trauma.
