TARGET GROUP

This course is targeted to all registered nurses who have responsibilities for Sutton residents and work within the London Borough of Sutton, including the Private Voluntary and Independent Sectors. 

AIMS

The aim of this session is:

  • To promote the safe and effective management of resident’s elimination needs and to facilitate and provide nurses with the theoretical knowledge and skills to safely undertake the following:
    • male and female catheterisation- urethral, suprapubic and intermittent
    • digital rectal examination (DRE) and digital removal of faeces (DRF)

LEARNING OUTCOMES 

At the end of this course participants will have:

  • An increased understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the bladder and bowel
  • An ability to apply skills and confidence on how to apply knowledge to the procedures of urethral, suprapubic and intermittent catheterisation, bladder washout, DRE, DRF, enemas and suppositories
  • An ability to outline evidence-based indications and contraindications for the use of catheterisation, DRE, DRF, enemas and suppositories
  • An improved knowledge on the nurse’s role in relation to legal and professional issues in relation to catheterisation and bowel management
  • An improved knowledge of infection prevention and control relating to catheterisation, particularly HCAIs, UTIs and E.coli bacteraemia
  • An increased knowledge on how to describe and return demonstration on a mannequin including aseptic technique for catheterisation
