TARGET GROUP

This training is targeted at professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Group Level 1 (awareness) for staff and volunteers not in direct contact with children as set out in the Safeguarding Competency framework in London Safeguarding Child Procedures and the NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards for health professionals
The training is targeted to those who come into contact with parents and families who are affected by parental mental illness during pregnancy and after giving birth. It is also aimed at those who need to familiarise themselves with PIMH in a care and support, specialist, strategic or commissioning role.

AIM

The aim of this course is to raise awareness about :
- How to recognise the most common perinatal mental disorders (CPMDs) including anxiety and depression during pregnancy and after giving birth.
- How to identify and respond to early help or safeguarding concerns within the specific context of perinatal and infant mental health (PIMH).
- The referral and care pathways for the mother and child and best practice approaches in the management of PIMH
- The impact of PIMH for the individual, parent-child attachment and how it can affect the child across the life course
- How the stigma associated with mental health can provide barriers to accessing support and how it affects women from a section of diverse communities.
