Child Sexual Abuse Awareness 24/25

Target Group: 

This training is targeted at professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, foster carers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation who work for the London Borough of Sutton.    

Competency level: 

Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads), and NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.  

This is a two day course, attendance is required at both sessions.

Aims: 

The aims of this session are:

• To increase participants’ understanding of child sexual abuse so that they are better placed to notice and respond to concerning behaviours exhibited by either adults or children.  
• To cover the prevalence of abuse within the UK, the impact of sexual abuse on victims, and the challenges of disclosure for children.  It also explores the process through which adults sexually abuse children, both via the internet and ‘in-person’, the warning signs of abuse (in both adults and children) and how best to respond to concerns about child sexual abuse.

By attending this course, participants will have:

• An increased awareness of the prevalence and reality of child sexual abuse in the UK 
• An increased awareness of personal attitudes and values
• An increased knowledge of the psychological processes through which people commit sexual offences 
• An increased knowledge of the impact of sexual abuse on the child
• An increased awareness of grooming behaviours and the signs of abuse exhibited by children
• An increased confidence in responding to concerns about sexual abuse
