Target group

This course is targeted to professionals who have responsibilities for SEND at all levels which includes social care, educational settings (early years providers, schools, academies, free schools, colleges), allied health professionals, therapeutic roles, practice leads, commissioned providers and private and voluntary organisations.   

Aims

The aims of this session are:

  • To be provided with information about the ‘risk’ and ‘resiliency’ factors associated with EBSA.
  • To have a psychological understanding of anxiety and avoidance.
  • To be provided  with information about the four functions of school avoidance.
  • To be provided with assessments and resources to use with young people, schools, and families e.g. questionnaires and case study examples.
  • To have key intervention principles from research.
  • To be provided with example templates to create individualised actions plans. 

Learning objectives

At the end of this course participants will have:

  • An increased confidence in recognising and supporting young people experiencing emotionally based school avoidance.
  • An improved understanding of the psychological underpinnings reinforcing school avoidance.
  • An increased knowledge of strategies and interventions that can be used to promote increasing school engagement/attendance.
