This course is targeted to foster carers who work for the London Borough of Sutton.

Aims:

The aims of this session is:

  • To improve the understanding of the barriers to achieving a successful male caring role, how men might navigate through these challenges and know the key areas of influence that men have on children in care, and how this is relevant for different age groups.

Learning Outcomes:  

By the end of the course participants will have:

  • An increased understanding of struggles men face in foster care
  • An increased understanding of men in fostering and what constitutes a positive male role model
  • An increased understanding of how male carers are perceived by professionals, children and young people
  • An ability to recognise how men contribute to the development of children and young people and improved outcomes
  • An increased knowledge in safer caring concerning the male carer
  • An ability to understand the unique position men in foster care are in and how they support children to gain positive attachments and build healthy relationships with men.
  • An increased knowledge and understanding into the allegations process
  • An increased understanding on the importance of safer care policy
  • An improved understanding on how to support children safely without restricting the care
