TARGET GROUP
This course is targeted to the adult workforce (see LSCP programme for those working with young people) to carry out their roles and responsibilities such as social care workers, carers, health professionals, police, public health and others that are part of the adults safeguarding partnership in the London Borough of Sutton.
AIMS
The aim of this course is to:
- Give participants a clearer understanding of the issues involved in working with people who harm themselves and/or have ideation about, or have attempted suicide.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course participants will have:
- An increased understanding of the various definitions of self-harm;
- An increased understanding of the various definitions of suicide and attempted suicide;
- An increased awareness of the importance of the continuum, from accidental harm to deliberate harm to attempted suicide to completed suicide;
- An improved knowledge of myths and misunderstandings around suicide and self-harm;
- An ability to identify some of the influencing factors, such as mental ill health and substance abuse;
- An ability to identify some early indicators which might indicate an increased risk of suicide and/or self-harm;
- An increased awareness of support strategies which might help a self-harmer to cope;
- An increased awareness of support strategies which might help a potential suicide victim to cope;
- An increased awareness of ways of ensuring that they look after their own emotional wellbeing when dealing with a potentially traumatic event.
