TARGET GROUP

This course is targeted to those who need to develop awareness, knowledge and skills to address controlling or coercive behaviour which is an offence under section 76 of the Serious Crime Act 2015. It relates to professionals and volunteers in a range of adults and children’s settings in Sutton.

The competency level refers to: Group Level 1 awareness (irregular contact with children) and 2 (regular contact with children) or Level 3 (predominately working with children) or above (including strategic leads) as set out in the Safeguarding Competency framework in London Safeguarding Child Procedures. Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.

AIM

The aims of this course are for participants:

1. To develop a better understanding about the statutory definition that states that:

  • Coercive behaviour is an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim
  • Controlling behaviour is a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape and regulating their everyday behaviour.

2. To acquire the knowledge, skills and confidence to identify and respond more effective to situations that involves coercive and controlling behaviour within the context of domestic abuse and VAWG

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By attending this course, participants will have:

  • Improved their awareness, knowledge, skills and confidence to describe and address controlling and coercive behaviour.
  • Critically examined models of power and control within the context of domestic abuse and VAWG
  • Gained an improved awareness of theoretical underpinnings of intersectionality of disability, race, sexuality and other protected characteristics in relation to power and control.
  • Improved their understanding about the impact of coercive control on children and vulnerable adults and the wider family and community.
  • Developed practical skills to apply legislation, research and knowledge in practice
  • Familiarised themselves with the materials on coercive control hosted on a web resource to cascade learning and development to colleagues.

The course will contain a mix of knowledge based resources and small group exercises.
