TARGET GROUP

This training is targeted to those that require awareness training to recognise and respond to emotional distress and self-harm for staff in early help and adolescent services, health professionals, schools, voluntary sector and others in irregular contact with children and families. The training is also suitable for those in strategic roles and specialist roles, including commissioners. 

Group Level 1 (awareness and 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominately working with children) or above (including strategic leads) as set out in the Safeguarding Competency framework in London Safeguarding Child Procedures. Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.

Please note that those in direct contact with children and young people should attend the full day self-harm management course for practitioner’s e g staff in children’s social care locality teams, safeguarding leads and those who are involved in assessments, safety planning and multi-agency meetings

AIM

This course aims to provide participants with the awareness of the signs and behaviour to recognise and respond to emotional distress and self-harm.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By attending this course, participants will have

  • An improved awareness of identification of self-harm and assessment of risk levels in line with the LSCB threshold for referral and assessment guidance.
  • Familiarised themselves with the multi-agency self-harm protocol
  • Developed and understanding about the importance of listening to young people
  • Developed an awareness of coping / distraction strategies and distress tolerance.
  • Developed an awareness of what best practice in managing self-harm looks like and how to follow referral pathways and signpost to services.
  • To understand possible functions of self-harm.
