Group Level 1 (awareness) for staff and volunteers not in direct contact with children as set out in the Safeguarding Competency framework in London Safeguarding Child Procedures and the NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards for health professionals

The training is targeted to those who come into contact with parents and families who are affected by parental mental illness during pregnancy and after giving birth. It is also aimed at those who need to familiarise themselves with PIMH in a care and support, specialist, strategic or commissioning role.

Please note: Those in direct contact with children and families will need to book onto the full day course for practitioners (level 2 and above).

The aim of this course is to raise awareness about :

  • How to recognise the most common perinatal mental disorders(CPMDs) including anxiety and depression during pregnancy and after giving birth.
  • How to identify and respond to early help or safeguarding concerns within the specific context of perinatal and infant mental health (PIMH).
  • The referral and care pathways for the mother and child and best practice approaches in the management of PIMH
  • The impact of PIMH for the individual, parent-child attachment and how it can affect the child across the life course
  • How the stigma associated with mental health can provide barriers to accessing support and how it affects women from a section of diverse communities.

By the end of this course participants will have:

  • An increased awareness about the most common clinical features of perinatal mental health illness.
  • Developed an understanding about the importance of the parent–infant relationship and how parental mental illness can affect the child across the life course
  • An increased awareness about the importance of fathers in the management of perinatal mental health.
  • An increased awareness of the stigma and risks associated with perinatal mental illness related to anxiety, depression and suicide
  • An improved understanding of the risks and impact on the child within the context of perinatal and infant mental health
  • Become familiar with the Local Safeguarding Children Partnership’s Multi-agency Perinatal Mental Health Protocol and the referral and care pathways for support and interventions
  • An awareness of the Sutton Perinatal Mental Health Network and how this works to develop services and collaborative working in Sutton
