TARGET GROUP
This course is targeted to Foster Careers with any level of experience.
COURSE OVERVIEW
There is a developing evidence base that carers of children with attachment difficulties (who have often experienced childhood trauma/abuse) need to respond differently to traditional models of parenting/caring to meet a child's specific needs. This training aims to provide a space for foster carers to think through their young people's behaviour and discuss what therapeutic caring strategies they could employ. It is also recognised how much foster carers do to support young people in care, therefore there will also be reflections on managing 'compassion-fatigue'.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course participants will have:
- Increased understanding of the impact of early adverse childhood experiences;
- Discussed and practice therapeutic caring/parenting techniques to help offset the impact of trauma/abuse;
- Explored the different therapeutic caring strategies for younger children and adolescents.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
It will be facilitated by Sutton's Looked after Children's CAMHS team, who can offer on-going support/consultation so if you wanted to discuss things further after the training we would be more than happy to keep in contact where helpful.
