Target Group:

All children social care professionals in the People Directorate and the Commissioning Unit. The course is also targeted to Foster Carers and others in a similar caring role.

This training is part of a programme of work to improve professionals and carers interaction with children who are looked after. The learning can also be applied to communicating with vulnerable children more broadly.

The overall aim is to develop practitioners and carers’ knowledge, skills and confidence to communicate more effectively with children about past experiences of abuse, neglect and exploitation to improve assessment and care planning processes.

The session is delivered through a mix of knowledge based content and practical exercises.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course participants will have:

  • Increased their knowledge and understanding about the most effective ways of communicating with children, including how to reframe and describe observable behaviour;
  • Improved their understanding about the differences between neutral descriptions of behaviour and interpretations of behaviour when working with looked after children;
  • Improved their skills in writing directly to children:
  • Increased awareness of the prevalence and impact of language difficulties for looked after children:
  • Improved their report writing skills, including critiquing examples of reports written to children to reflect on what ‘good’ looks like.
  • Improved their understanding and developed skills to help children reflect on their past experiences of abuse, neglect and/or exploitation.
