Target group
This course is targeted to those who have a role to support children who have special education needs and disabilities and/or have experienced trauma as a result of abuse and neglect. It includes social workers, family support workers, foster carers, health professionals, teachers and other education professionals, foster carers, residential care staff, youth workers and those in the community and voluntary sectors.
Aims
The aims of this session are to:
• Provide a definition of Dyslexia and literacy difficulties
• Dispel myths related to Dyslexia and literacy difficulties including around identification, intervention and resources
• Present research-based evidence around ‘what works’ in supporting children and young people with literacy difficulties
• Identify strategies and interventions which are best practice for use in educational settings
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course participants will have:
• An understanding of Dyslexia and literacy difficulties and how these needs are identified
• An understanding of the types of support which can be used to support pupils in schools and in the home
• An awareness of the evidence-base in relation to literacy development and support
