All delegates must have previously completed a one day practical Induction training session or a previous moving and handling refresher course within a two year period.

Course Overview:

Staff will be updated in current moving and handling practice relevant to their work so that they can continue to follow safe and acceptable practice and comply with current relevant legislation and national and local guidelines in manual handling.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, delegates will have updated their knowledge on how they will:

  • State how the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 directly affects them at work
  • Demonstrate the application of safer handling principles which reduce risk to a minimum when handling people in common situations relevant to their role
  • Demonstrate with confidence the correct use a wide range of handling equipment to solve a variety of common handling scenarios given by the trainer or shared within the group (relevant to their role) Delegates must state the criteria for use and potential risks involved when using such handling equipment.  This includes equipment which can encourage the independence of the service user.
  • State where to go for more help and information within the Borough and external to the Borough when needing further expertise.
  • State which handling techniques are not acceptable by current guidelines of HOP6 and explain their reasoning
  • Discuss how a range of common medical conditions may affect how a person can be moved and how the attitudes and feelings of clients can also affect the handling task.
  • List new advances or changes in handling equipment, local and national guidelines resources or practice and be able to pass this information onto their peers at their place of work.
  • Discuss how they have applied knowledge and skills learned in previous manual handling training to their work and bring specific issues of concern to the group for further discussion.

Additional Notes:

  • All delegates must be experienced and have previously completed a one day practical Induction training session or a previous moving and handling refresher course within a two year period.
Delegates will be asked if there are any specific issues which need to be addressed at the beginning of the session. All delegates will be asked how attending the last course changed their handling practice. Confidentiality will be respected at all times.
  • Due to Covid-19, to protect all the delegates, we have reduced the number of spaces to 3.
It is also important that all delegates:
