Course Overview
This course focuses on skills, techniques and tools required for communicating with children and young people in order to explore views, wishes and feelings. It also provides the theoretical framework that underpins children’s participation rights and the intentions of Children Act ’89 and related legislation.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of workshop participants will have an understanding of:
The main theories of direct work and effective communication with children and be able to link them to daily practice.
How to communicate clearly and sensitively with children of different ages and abilities, their families and in a range of settings and circumstances.
Responding effectively to engage children and families where hostility and resistance feature.
The impact of children’s earlier experiences on their capacity to express their feelings and needs.
How to use a number of different mediums and methods to practice direct work techniques with children and young people based on best evidence.
Demonstrate improved communication skills in order to engage in a positive and meaningful way, with children and young people.
Recognising the personal and emotional impact of using the methods on children and those supporting and caring for them.
Techniques to support direct work with hostile, angry and resistant children and families.
Linking practice to the knowledge and skills for approved child and family practitioners.
