Target Group / Level

Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominately working with children) or above (including strategic leads) as set out in the Safeguarding Competency framework in London Safeguarding Child Procedures. NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and 3 for health professionals.

Course Overview/ Aim

The focus of this course is to improve the engagement with children and young people by: 
• Improving the understanding about the underlying factors that act as barriers to communication and engagement 
• Exploring effective approaches to communicating and engaging vulnerable children and young people and the way the multi-agency partnership can support professionals to manage risks. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand the theory of attachment and resilience and how to effectively engage children and young people in the safeguarding process to provide the support they need
  • Explore learning from national and local Serious Case Reviews and other learning reviews to better understand the importance of risk assessments and when to address concerns with colleagues in the multi-agency partnership
  • Feel more confident about working with children and young people who are vulnerable or at risk of significant harm and not engaging 
  • Have a greater repertoire of practical ideas and resources to use with children and young people to help engage them in the safeguarding process
  • Understanding factors relating to attachment issues and how these can manifest into self-harm and depression and when to hold and when to refer on for specialist support
  • Recognise the impact children with attachment issues can have on professionals and the importance of professionals being supported
  • Understand the importance of the role and functions of other professionals in the multi-agency partnership to engage effectively with children, including the use of child advocacy.
