Course Overview

This one-day course aims to provide the knowledge and support for Care Managers, Case Workers, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists to develop their capabilities and strengthen their professional confidence in practice. It will also help them to undertake Risk Assessment and Management plans linked to Support Plans and a personalised approach. A range of areas will be examined including the complex issue of choice vs. control, the 'duty of care' and neglect. It will explore capacity and the right to make unwise decisions, and how to proactively engage vulnerable and reluctant service users.  It will explore best practice involving deciding who will be involved, identifying risks, strategies and developing support plans, whilst at the same time safeguarding service users’ individual rights.

The programme will include on practice application within the context of the local authority risk management policy and procedures. Decision making will be examined, and peer learning amongst the participant group encouraged, with a focus on shared learning and reflection specific to positive risk. The evidence base for positive risk and how outcomes can be improved by taking a co-productive approach with the individual will be emphasised throughout. Participants will be supported to explore their values, beliefs and assumptions, consider how these impact on decision making and how organisational cultures, custom and practice can influence the risk assessment and support planning processes.
