Target Group / Level

All registered nurses working within the London Borough of Sutton Adult Social Services, Housing and Health. 
All registered nurses in the Private Voluntary and Independent Sectors within Sutton and those who look after Sutton’s residents. 

Course Overview

To promote the safe and effective management of resident’s elimination needs 
To facilitate and provide nurses with the theoretical knowledge and skills to safely undertake the following: 
- Male and female catheterisation- urethral, suprapubic and intermittent 
- Digital rectal examination (DRE) 
- Digital removal of faeces (DRF) 

Attendees are expected to be assessed for competence in these skills within their workplace before undertaking them independently. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the training session participants will have:

 

  • Increased understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the bladder and bowel
  • Developed skills and confidence on how to apply knowledge to the procedures of urethral, suprapubic and intermittent catheterisation, bladder washout, DRE, DRF, enemas and suppositories
  • Gain the ability to outline evidence-based indications and contraindications for the use of catheterisation, DRE, DRF, enemas and suppositories
  • Refreshed knowledge on the nurse’s role in relation to legal and professional issues in relation to catheterisation and bowel management
  • Greater knowledge of infection prevention and control relating to catheterisation, particularly HCAIs, UTIs and E.coli bacteraemia
  • Gained the knowledge on how to describe and return demonstration on a mannequin including aseptic technique for catheterisation
