Target Group

This course is targeted to social care and health professionals in adults and children’s social care in the London Borough of Sutton.

Aims

This session is aimed at developing capabilities and strengthen professional confidence in practice to manage risk positively. The programme will cover:
• The evidence base and principles that inform positive risk management
• How to apply the legislative framework for positive risk assessment and management
• How outcomes can be improved by taking a co-productive approach
• Best practice when undertaking and recording risk assessments, and the importance of taking a personalised approach.
• How to complete management plans linked to support plans
• How values, beliefs and assumptions impact on decision making
• How organisational cultures, custom and practice can influence the risk assessment and planning processes.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course participants will have an:
• Improved understanding of the benefits of a positive risk management approach as opposed to more traditional defensive risk averse approaches.
• Explored best practice about deciding who will be involved, identifying risks, strategies and developing support plans
• Improved understanding about how to apply tools and legislative frameworks when assessing risk in practice using positive risk management principles.
• Improved ability to apply positive risk management to practice and utilise peer and management support as required.
• Improved ability to analyse how personal values and experience around risk may influence professional judgments.
• Improved ability to clearly record decision-making and how risk has been assessed and managed.
