This training is aimed at Children’s Social Care staff at the London Borough of Sutton. 

Aims

The aims of the session is:

To understand the term Parent Carer and who is eligible for an assessment under the Children Act 1989 (as amended by the Children and Families Act 2014).

To understand what is required of an effective Parent Carer Needs Assessment, including what is meant by supporting Parent Carer ‘Wellbeing’ as defined by the Care Act 2014.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session you will:
• Support practitioners to consider whether needs assessment for the child(ren) and parent(s) are best undertaken together or separately, and how to be holistic with both methods, also considering the wider family and community in a strengths-based manner.
• Be clear on how to ensure the needs of the parents are balanced with the duty to protect and promote the development and safety of the child(ren).
• Consider what should be done following the assessment.
• Understand the other relevant legislation to this topic ie: the Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995; The Carers and Disabled Children Act 2000; The Community Care (Delayed Discharges) Act 2003, The Human Rights Act 1998 and The Equalities Act 2010.
• Understand the transition for Young People, Parents and Families from Children’s Services to Adult Services, in particular the Care Act 2014.
