Domestic Abuse Awareness 24/25

TARGET GROUP

This training is targeted at:

• Professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation who work for the London Borough of Sutton.

Competency level: 

• Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads), and NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.

AIM

The aims of this session are: 

• To help participants understand what domestic violence is, how it may begin, who perpetrates abuse, and how to identify when it may be happening. 
• To outline the impact that domestic violence and abuse has on victims and assists learners to understand how to respond appropriately to their concerns

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants will have:

• An ability to explain what domestic violence and abuse is and identify who is at risk;
• An increased knowledge of the prevalence of the problem;
• An ability to understand the myths and realities regarding domestic abuse;
• An improved knowledge of diversity issues within domestic abuse cases;
• An ability to understand the behaviours displayed by an abusive person;
• An improved knowledge around indicators of abuse and recognise them in practice;
• An ability to outline the Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) process;
• An increased knowledge to describe the physical and psychological effects of violence and abuse;
• An improved knowledge to routinely ask about violence and abuse as part of assessments;
• An ability to respond appropriately to disclosures;
• An ability to describe best practices for supporting those experiencing domestic violence;
• An improved knowledge to respond with appropriate care to victims and provide safety planning;
• An ability to refer people experiencing or at risk of domestic and family violence to appropriate support services both local and national.
