Target group

This course is targeted to all Children's Social Care staff including Newly Qualified Social Worker's on the ASYE programme, who work for the London Borough of Sutton.

Aims

The aims of this course are: 

  • To ensure that staff within Children’s Social Care are confident and competent in record keeping and report writing in line with the requirements of the Children Act 1989, in a manner which is anti-oppressive and is accessible to both children and their families either at the current time of social care involvement or in the future. 
  • To ensure staff are able to articulate issues of capacity, risks, strengths and the service users viewpoint in a concise and professional manner, outlining options and decision-making that is both accountable and defensible.

Learning Objectives

By attending this course, participants will have: 

  • An increased knowledge to confidently write reports and case notes with appropriate legal literacy in terms of the Children Act 1989 using the correct terminology.
  • An ability to write in a way that is accessible to families and appropriate for children to read if choosing to access their records presently or in the future.
  • An ability to write in a manner that is still strengths-based even when raising concerns and outlining risks.
  • An ability to confidently write about safeguarding and risk – using language that is meaningful to the risk management process.
  • An ability to write professionally, concisely, accurately and clearly for the purposes of accountability.
  • An ability to clearly articulate reasoning and decision-making.
