Target group

This training is targeted at:

  • Professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation who work for the London Borough of Sutton.  

Competency level: 

  • Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads), and NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.

 Aims

The aims of this session are:

  • To gain a better understanding and increased knowledge of LGBT+ experiences and lives
  • To have a greater confidence in supporting and being an ally to LGBT+ children and young people
  • To improve knowledge of how to create a more inclusive and safer environment for LGBT+ children and young people

Learning objectives 

By attending this course, participants will have:

  • An increased knowledge of concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity
  • An increased knowledge around current terminology and language relating to sexual orientation and gender identity
  • An increased knowledge around common myths and misinformation about LGBT+ identities and people
  • An increased knowledge around relevant legislation and how this applies to an organisation providing services
  • An increased knowledge to identify and challenge homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying, insults and language
  • An increased knowledge on how to improve LGBT+ inclusion and make your organisation an LGBT+ safer space.
