Target Group: 

This training is targeted at:

  • Professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, foster carers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation who work for the London Borough of Sutton 

Competency level: 

  • Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads) as set out in the Safeguarding Competency framework in London Safeguarding Child Procedures. NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.

Aims:

The aim of this session:

  • To help understand the underlying causes of maladaptive behaviours such as eating disorders, substance misuse, and self-harm in young people.

Learning Outcomes: 

At the end of this course, participants will have:

  • An increased knowledge of the proportion of people in the United Kingdom who are affected by ACE
  • An understanding on how to determine what ACE is and how they are formed
  • An increased knowledge on the types of child maltreatment and adversity and the link to health in adulthood.
  • An understanding of what self-harm is and what might cause a LAC to self-harm
  • An understanding on how to explore ways foster carers can help LAC to control self-harming behaviour. 
  • An ability to identify other available, valuable and helpful resources. 
  • An increased knowledge about the range of drugs and substances that can be misused and the different effects of drugs. 
  • An improved knowledge and understanding of the reasons why people use substances. 
  • An increased knowledge on drug use trends and the current key profile of drug use.
  • An ability to recognise how the stress response system activates the fight, flight or freeze and becomes conditioned over time, especially in high-stress situations.
