Target Group 

This training is targeted at:

  • Professionals in direct contact with children who undertake or contribute to risk assessments and multi-agency meetings including social workers, family support workers, health professionals, schools, police and others who work with children at risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation

Competency level: 

  • Group Level 2 (regular contact with children, young people and/or parent/carer) or Level 3 (predominantly working with children) or above (including strategic leads), and NHS Inter-Collegiate Standards 2 and above for health professionals.


Please note: this is a refresher course, not an awareness course. Participants should already be familiar with Child Protection e.g. have previously attended Child Protection Awareness.

Aim

The aims of this session are: 

  • To provide an opportunity to those who have already attended Child Protection training to update their working knowledge of child protection issues based on “Working together to Safeguard Children 2023, Information Sharing Advice for Safeguarding Practitioners (2018), London Child Protection Procedures and messages from Serious Case Reviews. 
  • The focus is on safeguarding responsibilities across the multi-agency partnership and the importance of taking into account the voice of the child at all stages of the child protection process. 
  • To revisiting current definitions of child abuse and neglect and their application to practice, including signs of harm and risk factors; including specific issues for disabled children and other related groups of children
  • To understand the roles and duties of different agencies working together to safeguard children and any changes in legislation and guidance
  • To understand the importance of effective information sharing within the partnership
  • To understand key messages from Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPR) and the importance of the voice of the child
  • To review recent developments in approaches to assess children
  • To reflect on changes in changes to statutory guidance and legislation and impact on practice. 

Learning Outcomes

  • By attending this course, participants will have:


    • An improved knowledge on current legislation, guidance and key procedures, research and lessons from national and local CSPRs, and how to critically integrate these to assessments of children and families
    • An increased knowledge around the different stages of the child protection process, tasks, roles and responsibilities for all professionals involved
    • An improved knowledge about how to maintain focus on the child throughout all stages of assessment, analysis, planning of interventions and measures of outcomes
